An institution which is natural, dynamic and beneficial is born and grows like a tree. Central News Agency (CNA) , which is today 74 years old, is one such institution; a unique phenomenon eminently fit for celebration, in an environment where many institutions get stunted or whither away with the passage of time.

In 1936, in the salubrious climate of Shimla, India, an idea occurred to a young and frail physical culture enthusiast to set up a mail-order business for books written by some of the then popular body and character building sages like Bernor McFadden, Orison Swett Marden and James Allen. The author of this idea was Late B R Puri, the eldest of the three brothers (B.R., R.P. & B.S.) of the Puri family, which runs and controls what is today, India's foremost newspaper and magazine distribution company, with diverse business activities (besides what it started with) and with operations in the country and outside too.

Making a start as a two man organization with just a table space to call an office, CNA today has grown into a 250+ strong group which operates out of nine locations in New Delhi, Mumbai, New Mumbai, London and New York. The combined turnover of the group is now almost Rupees 350 million ($ 10 million). The group has gone through many a time of stress, strain and challenges but sheer hard labour, organizational skill and innate capacity for innovation have put it in good stead. Dedication and total commitment to customer service and individual attention have been the hallmark of the group from the very inception. All the goodwill and reputation that CNA enjoys today rests on this philosophy.

Having made a beginning with the door delivery of newspapers and magazines to a handful of customers in New Delhi, CNA now undertakes a wide variety of activities directly and through associated companies of the group. Having introduced the use of computers in the early 1980's, today almost all vital operations at CNA are automated
