Central News Agency, which is known as an institution today, was founded in the 1930s in Shimla by the eldest of the Puri brothers, the late Balak Ram Puri. His love of reading and passion for books led him to start a mail order business for books and magazines by well known inspirational writers of the day, like James Allen, Orison Swett Marden and Bernor McFadden. Later, as the orders increased and the work showed a promising future, his younger brothers R.P. And B.S were inducted into the business. Under their dynamic leadership and guidance from the founder, CNA grew to become the institution that it is today.

With the coming of Independence the business shifted base to Delhi and CNA started the door delivery of newspapers and magazines to a handful of customers. As the newly formed Government of India set up its Ministries and Institutions, CNA a pioneer in the field was the natural choice as vendor of newspapers and magazines. Similarly, as more and more countries opened their Diplomatic Missions in India, CNA was selected as a reliable supplier for newspapers and magazines. Around that time CNA also started importing foreign newspapers and magazines , mainly from U.K. for its growing clientele.

Over the years, CNA expanded its activities to become one of the leading journal subscription agencies in the country as well as a supplier of books. In its heydey, the CNA retail shop in Connaught Place counted among its regular visitors, the leading intellectuals, politicians and artists of the day. Prof Mushirul Hasan,Dr. Bipan Chandra, Dr.Gopal Singh, Karpuri Thakur, Sitaram Kesri, Dr.Manmohan Singh, Rajiv Gandhi, M.F.Hussain, Sudihir Dar, Yamini Krishnamurti, Teji Bachchan, Jatin Das and Kiran Sehgal were regular walk - in customers. Today, the CNA Book store is known for its eclectic collection of books, a large magazine display as well as a specialised book procurement service.

In recent years, as more and more libraries switch to Ejournals, C.N.A. is fulfilling their requirements for Digital Subscriptions. Books and magazines are now also offered on online platforms, as well as through the C.N.A. Website.
